(St'Werbs. Comm. Centre) Our Rough Island Story

Sunday 18 September 2016

The lost stories of St Werburghs

This Summer at the St Werburghs Community Centre we have been undertaking an interesting and unique project called Our Rough Island Story. We have found an alternative St Werburghs of which until now we never knew was there.

Our Rough Island Story aims to learn about the lost and untold stories of St Werburghs. We have a War Memorial housed on the front of the Community Centre which names 93 men whom served in the First World War all from this small community in St Werburghs. The memorial has served as our portal to the past.

The findings are starting to give us an idea of the kinds of people who made up the community in the area and also the effects of the loss of these people on the wider community. Slowly the research is building a more vivid picture of St Werburghs a Century ago.

To mark the occasion and to bring this incredible project to a close we will be hosting a Memorial Service at the Centre this November 11th from 10:30am. This will be the first of it's kind for 40 years and we would like to invite you to attend. We will show art work made by the pupils of the St Werburghs Primary school there will be a poetry reading as well as refreshments so please do pop by and learn more about the lost stories of St Werburghs.

To find out more we will be present at community events like the Picnic in the Park the St Werburghs Arts Trail St Werburghs Christmas Market a Memorial Service at the Centre St Werburghs' Centre's AGM and we will also be producing a booklet of the findings.
