Highly praised City Farm cafe will be better than ever after building work
Friday 19 January 2007
St. Werburghs City Farm Cafe is closing for a couple of weeks in January for improvements. Local builders from The Yard have been shoring up the cafe's foundations and extending the terrace around the cafe. This will greatly increase the outdoor sitting area and allow space for some further planting.
The Evening Post supplement, 'Seven' was impressed by the cafe. They reviewed it as follows:- " There's something so very Tolkienesque about St Werburghs City Farm Cafe that you half expect the staff to have large, furry feet.
Maybe it's the friendly, Hobbit House feel to the place (I'm reliably informed the wooden treehouse-style interior was even designed by a local company called Bristol Gnomes). Or it could be the fact that all the animals in the adjacent farm look so happy and intelligent that you half expect them to strike up conversation as you walk past on the way to the cafe. There's certainly something otherworldly about this corner of the fascinating, timeless area that is St Werburghs and the hub of the community is the farm's very own cafe.
In many ways, the St Werburghs City Farm Cafe feels like a secret place - somewhere only the locals really know about - but when I turned up there for Saturday lunch the place was packed, with several anxious people waiting for tables. Not that it seemed to be stressing the chilled out, friendly staff, who looked as if they really enjoy working at this relaxed, unpretentious and feel-good cafe.
This is not a place for fast food. If anything, it follows the mantra of the burgeoning Slow Food Movement. A small Early Learning Centre blackboard by the counter proudly boasts "microwave-free zone - please be patient" , which is enough to warm anybody's cockles.
The St Werburghs City Farm Cafe is run by the formidable Leona Williamson. Until I saw her taking orders behind the counter, I didn't realise she was the woman I see every Wednesday morning buying vast amounts of stuff at the Corn Street farmer's market. The highlight of my week is an early-doors visit to the farmer's market and for the past few months I had been wondering who this woman was buying enough fresh local produce to feed an army. Now I know. Leona has been running the cafe for a couple of years now and she buys the fresh ingredients straight from the local producers if she can.
Once she's taken them back to the cafe, her chefs are left to their own devices in the tiny kitchen with it's five-ring stove. The kitchen may be small, but the menu is big on inspiration and flavours.
There's a breakfast menu that starts with toast (overnight white or malted wheat toasted and served with jam or marmalade - £1.20) and moves up to the City Farmer's English Breakfast (£4.95 for free-range pork sausage and grilled bacon rashers, fried egg, baked beans, slow-roast tomato and wilted spinach with toast)
From noon, main meals include fisherman's pie (locally smoked haddock, leeks and mashed local potatoes topped with farmhouse cheese sauce served with steamed seasonal vegetables - £5.25) and "Farm burgers" (free-range, seasoned beef or a veggie-friendly mixed nut and chickpea burger served in a three-seed bun with potato wedges, salad and sweet chilli sauce - £5.75)
On the day that I visited, the daily specials included spiced pumpkin and red lentil soup with Herbert's Bakery bread (£3.50) and beef and Guiness sausages with bubble and squeak and red onion gravy (£5.75) Just look at those prices - nothing more than £6. Add to that the fact that almost every dish on the menu is available to children at half price and it must make this one of the best value family-friendly places to eat in Bristol.
From the specials board, I ordered the whole pan-fried mackerel (£5.95)which had been marinated in lemon, garlic and herbs. Having recently eaten mackerel in deepest, darkest Cornwall, where this most underrated of fish had been caught a couple of hours before it landed in the kitchen, I can tell when it's fresh and this one was as spankingly fresh as it could be. The mackerel was correctly cooked and seasoned and served with some roast peppers and onions and new potatoes sprinkled with flakes of sea salt. There was some salad and a few fresh coriander leaves on top. For £5.95, it was remarkable value.
To follow, a fat slice of baked vanilla, lemon and sultana cheesecake (£1.75) was spot-on, and a glass of local Day's Cottgae pear and apple juice (£1.40) was autumn in a glass, even in the depths of winter.
St Werburghs City Farm Cafe doesn't open in the evenings, which is a shame. If it did, I'm sure it would be packed every night. As it is, it does open in the evening on the first Friday of the month for a world cuisine evening, ehere the menu concentrates on a particular country and the meal is accompanied by appropriate music. Places must be at a premium so phone Leona for more details. It's worth noting that St Werburghs City Farm Cafe will be closed for building work between January 8th and 21st, but if you want to start 2007 with a meal that sets the tone for the year ahead, I suggest you book now. After two years as one of Bristol's best-kept culinary secrets, the secret's finally out." Mark Taylor
