Us(eless) Bus service to finish

Sunday 24 June 2007

The Community Bus Service, The 'US Bus' linking the communities of St Werburghs and St Pauls with Easton across the M32, is ending on 30th June.

The pressure for a service linking inner city communities on either side of the M32 came from local demonstrations protesting against the barrier caused by traffic and street crime. They tapped into some of the 37 million pounds the Government set aside to help develop transport services in urban areas.

However the bus service, which ran hourly from 8am to 8pm was handicapped from the start by a Section 19 statute restricting the service to members only with information on the timetable and list of joining points (what the rest of us call 'bus stops') only available to these members. Tickets also had to be bought in advance from a number of outlets near to the joining points and a membership card presented before tickets could be bought.

Although they reached 1000 members numbers actually using the bus each week were sometimes as low as 8, 15 and 27. When the ghostly US Bus was ever spotted it was usually driven by a very lonely and bored looking driver.

So the community bus project designed to be as restricted and covert as possible unsurprisingly comes to the end of its life next weekend.
